Course Overview:

The BA (Hons) Musical Theatre degree course will prepare you to become a successful professional within the performing arts industry. The practically orientated nature of the course will support students to develop and enhance their technical skills and knowledges across a range of disciplines within Musical Theatre: acting, singing and dance.

Students will also develop a critical understanding of the workings of the wider creative Industries, providing students with the skills and knowledge for future careers opportunities and choices. As part of this course, you will also have the opportunity to take part in various performance opportunities including a full-scale musical in Level 6.

Alongside the degree course opportunities, each student will also attend master classes and workshops and gain valuable experience working with exciting and current Directors, Choreographers, Musical Directors, Casting Directors, Producers, Singers, Dancers and Actors.

In the first year of study, you undertake a range of practical modules which are designed to consolidate and build your practical skills in singing, dance and performance for musical theatre. Other modules also start to introduce you to the skills, techniques and approaches to academic study within the performing arts perspective. There are also a range of performance opportunities throughout the year.

Toolkit for success: Kickstart your journey into higher education in this focused module that provides you with the tools you need to succeed. Learn how to clearly present yourself, critical consider performance work and gain the research skills that you need to support your ideas.

Performance Skills in Context: ant to develop performance skills in a fun, fast and focused environment? This module allows to do just that. Through dynamic classes in dance, acting and singing, our amazing team of industry professionals and experienced lecturers will support you to further develop your existing skills and encourage you to reach your real potential. You will also learn about the emergence and development of musical theatre from a variety of Western Non-Western contexts.

21st Century Performance: Working with a professional team of creatives you will rehearse and perform a contemporary musical theatre production. This will give you an opportunity to apply the skills and techniques developed during your level 4 studies, work to professional industry standards and perform to a live audience.

In the second year you continue to enhance and develop your practical skills working across a variety of approaches and techniques in musical theatre. You explore the genre of musical theatre further by examining the history and context of a range of performance approaches. You also participate in two major assessed performance pieces, drawing on traditional and contemporary musical theatre genres.

Personal Practice: Want to try your hand at choreography, or perform an excerpt from your favourite musical? This hyperpersonalised module allows you to take the reins in your personal development through the completion of a bespoke research project that allows you to further develop your identity as a performing arts practitioner. You will engage in focused discussions with your tutors, peers and industry professionals and then apply skills learned in class to your research project.

Traditional Performance: Immerse yourself in the world of traditional performance. Working with a professional creative team you will rehearse and perform a traditional musical theatre performance.  Delving into the contextual and historical background of selected genres, you will be given the theoretical knowledge to analyse and discuss.

Contemporary Performance: In this module you will be given the opportunity to work collaboratively with a professional creative team on a contemporary musical theatre performance. Using skills and techniques learned throughout the course you will bring a musical from page to stage.

In the final year you have the opportunity to showcase your skills both individually and as part of a company. You take part in both individual performances and feature within a major final production. You are required to reflect on your own development as a performer and explore your own future career plans. You also explore how you can promote yourselves to the wider industry. You develop your own promotional materials – including show reels, industry CV’s etc – which demonstrate the range of skills and approaches you have developed, which you can then use to promote to the external industry.

Professional Practice: Springboard your career with this essential module that enables you to focus the on developing your professional identity

Creative Company: Pitch your project and let s get creative! This module calls for innovation and teamwork as you apply your skills in a company setting from the initial concept to final realisation of a performance-based project.

Final Performance: A culmination of skills, techniques and theories that have been developed and honed during the course, you are now ready for your final performance as a student before venturing into the industry.

What to expect on your Audition Day:

Our audition day is divided into two stages, each designed to assess various aspects of your performance abilities.

The first form of assessment is in three dance technique classes; Ballet, Commercial and Musical Theatre/Jazz.

In the second part of the day, candidates will be asked to perform a solo song (32-bar cut) and monologue (no longer than 1 min 30 seconds).

Throughout the auditions, our senior teachers and principals will be observing closely, evaluating not just your current skills but also your potential for growth and development in all areas.

Finally, the day concludes with a one-to-one interview with our principals. This is an opportunity for us to get to know you better, discuss your aspirations, and answer any questions you may have about our college.
